In March of 1871, Santa Fe engineers
surveyed and plotted the Newton town site on Section 17, which was owned by the
Santa Fe Railroad.
Cyrus K. Holliday first conceived the idea of
building a railroad in 1859 for the following reasons: to replace the slow,
dangerous and overcrowded Santa Fe Trail; to terminate the Chisholm Trail at a
point south of Abilene: to connect with the Missouri, Kansas & Texas
Railroad at Emporia; and to handle the coal business from the coal mines at
Burlingame.
